Weight Pre-Occupation Community Education Program
Promoting healthy body- image and tools for eating disorder prevention

Women’s Health Clinic is a non-profit community health centre whose mandate emphasizes prevention, education and informed choice in health services for women.  As part of our philosophy of prevention and education, our Community Education Program addresses issues affecting the health of children and women.   Women’s Health Clinic has been providing education, intervention and treatment related to body image, weight preoccupation and disordered eating for over 20 years.

Trained volunteers are available to provide the following six interactive discussions:

  • My Amazing Body (for boys and girls - grades 1- 3)
  • Body Image & Weight Pre- Occupation (for girls in grades 4- 12)
  • Body Image & Weight Pre- Occupation (for adult women's groups)      This session can be tailored to fit the needs of specific adult audiences (pre and post natal, mid- life women, seniors etc).
  • Celebrating Me!  Self Esteem for Girls (for girls in grades 4 - 12)
  • Self Esteem & Self Care for Women (for adult women's groups)
  • Fostering Healthy Body Image in Children (for parents groups)

Our body-image presentations challenge the current ideal of a thin body for girls and women and explore the social and cultural factors that perpetuate this image.  Our goal is to promote the development of a healthy self-image and encourage a friendly relationship with one’s body and with food.  We promote eating and exercising for energy, pleasure and wellness; dieting is discouraged.

Self-esteem presentations teach where self-esteem comes from, how to improve it and why it is important.  Girls and women are taught skills for self-care and are motivated to value themselves

The “Amazing Body” workshop for young children includes story, video, movement and discussion to address topic such as diversity in body types, teasing & how to handle it, recognizing and respecting the body’s sensations of hunger and fullness, importance of movement and making balanced nutritional choices.

Our volunteer speakers encourage discussion and questions to facilitate a participatory learning environment.  Speakers are available for day or evening presentations. Presentations are usually an hour long but we can be flexible to the needs of your group.

We do request an honorarium to help cover the costs of training and reproductions of materials, however, we will still provide the service if your group is unable to make a donation. This program is partially funded by the United Way.

To arrange a volunteer speaking engagement, or for more information, please contact the Weight Pre-occupation Community Education Program Coordinator at (204) 947-2422, ext. 114 or email: marina@womenshealthclinic .org
