Health Education & Information

Through our Health Education and Resource Programs, we offer information and learning opportunities for community groups, schools, service providers and individuals on a wide range of health topics.

Health Education

Postnatal Education Workshops

Women’s Health Clinic developed Coping with Change Postnatal Education Workshops for parents in the community and the service providers who work with them to build knowledge and support about the emotional changes parenting brings to our lives.

For more information on the following  Coping with Change workshops, please call Leigha at 947-2422, ext. 113.

Coping with Change workshops for community groups

You’ve attended prenatal classes or pre-adoption workshops and now baby is home. What’s next?

Coping with Change workshops are designed to help you understand the everyday changes you might experience when introducing a baby into your life.

Coping with Change is a 5-part workshop that is also offered as individual education sessions to community groups of parents. Some topic themes are:

  • Meeting baby
  • Emotional adjustments
  • Relationship changes
  • Networking

Coping with Change workshops for service providers

Professional development seminars designed to provide health and social service providers with knowledge and skills to help normalize a woman’s experience after giving birth or adopting a baby.

Sexual Health

For more information, please call Tanya at 947-2422, ext. 213.

Weight Preoccupation

Women’s Health Clinic has been providing education, intervention and treatment related to body image, weight preoccupation and disordered eating for over 20 years. Our  Weight Preoccupation Community Education Program promotes healthy body-image and tools for eating disorder prevention.

Our volunteer speakers encourage discussion and questions to facilitate a participatory learning environment.  Speakers are available for day or evening presentations. Presentations are usually an hour long but we can be flexible to the needs of your group.

We do request an honorarium to help cover the costs of training and reproductions of materials. However, we will still provide the service if your group is unable to make a donation. This program is partially funded by the United Way.

To arrange a volunteer speaking engagement, or for more information, please contact Angie at 947-2422, ext. 114.

Trained volunteers are available to provide the following workshops to schools and community groups throughout Winnipeg.

  • My Amazing Body (for girls & boys grades 1-3) This workshop for young children includes a story, movement and discussion and addresses topics such as diversity in body types, teasing and how to handle it, recognizing and respecting the body’s sensations of hunger and fullness, the importance of movement and making balanced nutritional choices.
  • Body Image & Weight Preoccupation (for girls grades 4-12; for adult women’s groups)  Our body-image presentations challenge the current ideal of a thin body for girls and women and explore the social and cultural factors that perpetuate this image.  Our goal is to promote the development of a healthy self-image and encourage a friendly relationship with one’s body and with food.  We promote eating and exercising for energy, pleasure and wellness; dieting is discouraged.
  • Body Image for Boys (grades 4-8)  Teacher-led workshop package for boys to accompany the above workshop for girls.
  • Celebrating Me! Self-Esteem for Girls (for girls grades 4-12)  Self-esteem presentations teach where self-esteem comes from, how to improve it and why it is important.  Girls are taught skills for assertive communication, self-care and are encouraged to value diversity.
  • Self-Esteem & Self-Care for Women (for adult women’s groups) Self-esteem presentations teach where self-esteem comes from, how to improve it and why it is important.  Women are taught skills for assertive communication, self-care and are encouraged to value diversity.
  • Fostering Healthy Body Image in Children (for parents’ groups)  A facilitated discussion on healthy body image and why it’s important. This includes influences on children’s body image (including family, media and social influences), normal child and teen development, and ways to promote healthy relationships with food and healthy body image.
