Appendix 4: "Tool Kit" Overview

WHAT IS THE TOOL KIT?

The Tool Kit is a resource for individuals and groups interested in becoming familiar with the health reform process and issues of health affecting women and their families. It is intended to encourage and support women's participation as the health system is restructured and reformed. In particular, the Tool Kit provides critical information to help women understand the process of regionalization and to facilitate their involvement in local communities. The Kit was prepared in 1997 by the Women & Health Reform Working Group (WHRWG) with financial support from the Health Promotion and Programs Branch, Health Canada.

WHY WAS IT DEVELOPED?

The WHRWG was formed in 1996 following a series of community meetings in Winnipeg hosted by the Women's Health Clinic. Women from more than 60 community and professional organizations, as well as interested individuals, came together through a shared concern about the health reform process and how it might affect women. The Working Group collected information about health reform, met with key individuals involved in the reform/regionalization process and undertook a process of strategic planning to ensure that as many women as possible would become informed about health reform.

As part of the process of identifying and linking with women throughout the province, the WHRWG facilitated workshops in March 1997 in Thompson and Dauphin. There was agreement that there was an urgent need to provide women with information about health reform and opportunities to discuss its impact, if they are to become active participants now and in the future. To enable this process, the WHRWG developed a Tool Kit to provide resource material on health reform and information on how to organize a community meeting for other interested women.

WHO IS THE TOOL KIT FOR?

The Tool Kit is a resource for individuals who want to familiarize themselves with the health reform process and a sample of the issues that have been raised. As well it is a resource for groups who have the opportunity to come together to learn and discuss the information and issues raised.

The Tool Kit contains information about how to organize and run a discussion group as well as background information on a variety of topics related to health reform and women.
